It's all very well connecting computers together but how, exactly, do they communicate? In this topic, we look carefully at the different logical methods in which computers can be connected together with the operation of the Internet and the World Wide Web. We also take a quick look at encryption techniques. No requirement for AQA and limited for OCR.

We are learning ...
  • About the physical ways in which components can be fastened together in a computer system
  • To describe various error checking mechanisms
  • About the structure of the Internet and the WWW
  • about the need for data encryption
  • To state the effect of network components on communication speed.
So that we can ...
  • Define the term data transmission
  • Describe the differences between parallel and serial transmission
  • Discuss the benefits and drawbacks of both parallel and serial transmission
  • Define the difference between simplex, duplex and half-duplex transmission
  • State the application of serial (USB) and parallel (IC buses) transmission in computer systems
  • Describe simple communication error checking methods ...
    - Parity
    - Check digits
    - Checksums
    - ARQs
  • Describe the operation of the Internet ...
    - The concept of the Internet
    - The DNS
    - Web hosting
    - The 'cloud'
    - Role of the browser
    - Role of the ISP
    - The World Wide Web
    - The use of HTTP / HTTPS and HTML
    - The difference between HTML and CSS - structure and style
    - MAC addresses
    - IP Addresses
    - URLs
    - Cookies
  • Discuss and describe methods of data encryption ...
    - Caeser cipher (as an introduction to encryption)
  • Describe practical methods of network speed measurement
