Sometimes, the best way to get to grips with some concept is to get your hands dirty and get stuck in! Electronics, programming, robotics, all of these complement each other and help you learn one thing in the context of another. There are lots of physical computing resources - some cheap, some expensive. Pick your budget and crack on.
