001: the kindness camera: creating digital stories with respect (ks1)

A KS1 Computing lesson for Year 1 and 2 students. Children learn about digital photography and the importance of asking for permission (consent) before taking photos.

The Kindness Camera

The Scenario
You are a famous photographer! You have a brand new camera. You want to take a photo of your friend for a magazine. But first, you must use your Responsible Innovator magic words.

image
The Persona
The Responsible Innovator thinks about feelings. They know that we must always ask before we take a photo of someone else.

1
Open your tools

Click on the icon for your paint or drawing program.
Make sure you have a white screen ready.

2
Draw your friend

Choose a pencil or paintbrush tool.
Choose a colour you like.
Draw a picture of your best friend smiling.
Top Tip: Draw a big circle for the head first!

3
Draw the photographer

Now, draw yourself standing next to your friend.
Draw a square in your hands. This is your camera.

4
The Magic Question

This is the most important part!
Draw a big speech bubble coming from your mouth.
Inside the bubble, type or write these magic words:
May I please take your photo?

5
The Kind Answer

Draw a speech bubble for your friend.
Write their answer inside.
They can say Yes please! or No thank you!

Outcome
I have drawn a picture of a photographer and a friend.
I have added a speech bubble.
I have written the question "May I take your photo?".
I know that I must ask permission before taking pictures.
