majestic cinema
BTEC Tech Award in Digital Information Technology
Vocational context
The Majestic Cinema is a popular, independent community cinema that has been serving its local town for over 50 years. To modernise its services and improve customer experience, the management team wants to create a new digital information point to be integrated into its existing website.
The information point will be the primary way for customers to find out what's on, check the cinema's facilities, and book tickets online.
The information point must consist of 4 screens and be accessible on a range of devices, from desktop computers to customers' handheld devices.
Tasks
This scenario can be used to deliver the full range of tasks required for Component 1:
Task 1a - Project proposal: Complete the "Project Proposal Template" using the information in the Project Proposal Brief below.
Task 1b - Planning timescales: Use a project planning tool to create a 12-week project plan based on the timescales provided in the brief. The plan must show tasks, sub-tasks, milestones, and dependencies.
Task 2 - Interface designs: Produce computer-generated designs for the four screens of the user interface:
Home
What's On
Facilities & Accessibility
Ticket Booking
Task 3 - User interface prototype: Use your designs to create a working prototype of the user interface, including navigation between the four screens.
Task 4 - User interface review: Review your prototype against the user requirements in the brief, evaluating its ease of use, design principles, and accessibility features, and suggesting potential improvements.
Project proposal
The Majestic Cinema needs a new digital information point for its website.
The audience for the information point will be the diverse local community, which includes adults, families with young children, teenagers, and customers with accessibility needs (e.g., wheelchair users, patrons with visual or hearing impairments).
Customers will use the information point to find information about film screening times, learn about the cinema’s facilities (including parking and refreshments), check for special offers, and book tickets online.
Each of the four screens should have a consistent layout that reflects the cinema's brand. The language used should be clear and easy to understand for all age groups. Navigation between screens should be simple and intuitive, particularly the ticket booking process. Information about accessibility features, such as wheelchair access and audio-described screenings, must be clearly labelled and easy to find.
The project budget is £8,200 and the planned launch date is in 12 weeks' time.
Planning timescales
It is estimated that the digital information point project will take 12 weeks to complete.
Design stage (4 weeks total):
Research existing cinema websites
Complete project proposal
Produce initial designs (wireframes)
Development stage (6 weeks total):
Source and create digital assets (images, icons)
Prototyping of the four screens
Implementation of navigation and interactive elements
Review stage (2 weeks total):
User testing with a small focus group
Final review against the project brief
Suggest improvements for the next version
Throughout the project, you will also need to schedule regular meetings with the client (The Majestic Cinema's management team).

Task Key requirements
1
Set up your mindmap
Place the title "The Majestic Cinema Project" in the centre of your page. Create branches for each of the following FIVE areas:
1
Project Summary
2
Target Audience
3
Key Features & Content
4
Design Requirements
5
Project Constaints
2
Project Summary
Make a brief summary of all the key areas in the project in your own words:
Tasks
Project proposal
Planning timescales
Resource document
3
Target Audience
Who are the different types of people that will use the new digital information point?
What are their specific needs? (Think about different age groups and accessibility requirements).
4
Key Features & Content
What are the main things customers must be able to do using the information point?
What specific information needs to be included (e.g., film times, facilities, offers)?
What are the four screens you will need to design?
5
Design Requirements
What does the brief say about the layout and branding?
What are the requirements for the language and navigation?
6
Project Constraints
Are there any limitations you need to be aware of?
Think about the budget and the timescale for the project.
Outcome: A detailed mind map that visually summarises all the key components of the Majestic Cinema project brief, demonstrating an initial understanding of the project's goals, audience, and constraints.
Extension Task
Begin to sketch out some very rough initial ideas for the layout of the 'Home' screen. Think about where the cinema's logo, the main navigation, and key information could be placed. This is just for brainstorming – it doesn’t need to be neat or detailed.
