As is very common with these drives, the head is stuck on the parking bumper. The trick to this is to disassemble the drive by removing the four torx screws, separate the armature from the bumper (it will be stuck) and then put a piece of tape over the bumper to prevent the head sticking to it again.

When I tried to power up the drive, it span up but then quickly cycled. Once the head had been released, it powered up fine via a USB to 2.5" IDE adapter. However, apparently, it's not possible to read the drive from this - I need to use a motherboard with an IDE connection.
