Have you ever wondered what the most popular video game in the world is right now, or what questions people are asking during a major news event? Google keeps a record of everything we search for. In this lesson, we will use Google Trends to analyse real-world data, spotting fascinating patterns and seeing exactly what the world is thinking about.

Surfing the Zeitgeist: A Deep Dive into Google Trends


What is Google Trends?


Imagine you could see a graph of the entire world's curiosity. That's essentially what Google Trends is. It's a free, public website created by Google that shows how often a specific search term is entered into their search engine over a given period of time. It doesn't show you the raw number of searches (that would be a massive, messy number!), but instead plots the term's popularity on a clean, simple graph. It is one of the most powerful tools for understanding the zeitgeist - a German word meaning "the spirit of the age".

How Does it Work?


When you look at a Google Trends graph, you're not seeing millions of searches. Instead, the data is anonymised (all personal information is removed) and then normalised. This means Google finds the point where the search term was most popular (its peak popularity) and gives that point a score of 100. Every other point on the graph is then scored relative to that peak. A score of 50 means the term was half as popular as it was at its peak. This clever system makes it incredibly easy to compare the popularity of different topics, even if one is searched for millions of times and the other only thousands.

Spotting Patterns and Telling Stories


The real magic of Google Trends is in finding patterns. An analyst can look at a graph and instantly understand a global story. There are a few common types of trends:

A major online news website has hired you as a Junior Data Analyst. Your first task is to investigate the public interest in two competing topics over the last year. They want a one-page report that compares the trends and explains what the data is telling you.

Choose your trends

Decide on two competing things you want to investigate. A good comparison makes for a good story.

Examples:
Gaming: "PlayStation" vs "Xbox"
Social Media: "TikTok" vs "Instagram"
Entertainment: "Marvel" vs "DC"
Sport: "Premier League" vs "Champions League"
Enter your first search term in the box and press Enter. Then, click on + Compare and add your second term.

Act as a data science teacher. Explain the concept of data normalisation on a scale of 0-100 for a KS3 student. Use a simple analogy like a video game high score table. Set your parameters

Data is only useful in context. We need to make sure we are looking at the right time and place.
Just below the search terms, find the location button. It probably says "Worldwide" by default. Change this to United Kingdom.
Next to that, find the time range. Change this from "Past day" to Past 12 months.

Analyse the data

Now you're an analyst! It's time to find the story. Look at all the information on the page.
Interest over time: Look at the main line graph. Are there any big spikes or dips? Hover your mouse over them to see the date. Can you guess what might have caused a spike (e.g., a new game release, a movie premiere)?
Interest by region: Look at the map of the UK. Is one of your topics more popular in England than in Scotland?
Related queries: Scroll down to the tables at the bottom. This shows you what else people were searching for. This is a great way to understand why a trend might be popular.

Write your report

Open a word processor (like Microsoft Word or Google Docs) and create your one-page report.
Title: Give your report a clear, professional title (e.g., "A Data Analysis of PlayStation vs. Xbox Search Trends in the UK").
Introduction: Write a short paragraph explaining which two trends you chose to investigate.
Evidence: Take a screenshot of your Google Trends graph and paste it into your document.
Analysis: Write two or three paragraphs explaining what your data shows. Point out any interesting spikes, compare the overall popularity, and use the 'Related queries' to support your ideas.
Conclusion: Write a final short paragraph summarising your findings. Which trend was more popular over the last year, and what is your main piece of evidence for this?

Your final submission is a professional, one-page report.
The report contains a clear title and a screenshot of your evidence.
Your analysis explains the patterns in the data, not just describes them.
