001. the digital footprint: respect, media, and reality (ks3)

Discover how your online actions create a permanent digital footprint and learn to navigate social media with respect and responsibility.

Every time you post, like, or share something online, you leave a trail behind you - a digital footprint. In this lesson, we are going to explore what your footprint says about you. We will look at how to show respect online, tell the difference between media and reality, and build an online reputation you can be proud of.

Your Invisible Tattoo: The Digital Footprint

Imagine walking on a sandy beach. Every step you take leaves a mark. Now imagine that those footprints in the sand could never be washed away by the tide. This is exactly what happens when you use the internet. Every time you post a photo, leave a comment, or like a video, you are creating a permanent digital footprint.

What is a Digital Footprint?

Your digital footprint is the trail of data you leave behind while using the internet. It includes the websites you visit, the messages you send, and the information you share on social media. As a Responsible Innovator, it is crucial to understand that this trail is often public and can last forever. Just like a tattoo, it tells a story about who you are.

Media vs. Reality

It is easy to scroll through social media and think everyone else is living a perfect life. But remember, what you see online is usually a carefully selected highlight reel. People use filters, editing tools, and perfect lighting to show only their best moments. Comparing your real, messy, everyday life to someone else's edited highlights can make you feel down. A key part of digital wellbeing is understanding the difference between curated media and reality.

Respect and Reputation

Your online reputation is built on your digital footprint. Future employers, colleges, and friends will look at what you post. It is essential to treat others with respect online, just as you would face-to-face. Think before you click "send". Is it kind? Is it true? Is it necessary? By taking control of your online presence now, you can build a positive digital identity that you will be proud of in the future.

Plugged task: The Year 7 Guide

The Scenario

You have been asked by the Head of Year 7 to help the younger students understand the long-lasting impact of their online actions. Many of them are just getting their first smartphones and social media accounts, and they need guidance on how to avoid the trap of comparing themselves to impossible digital standards and how to protect their future reputations.

Today, you are going to create a single-page digital infographic or presentation slide titled "The Year 7 Guide to Digital Footprints & Reality".

The Persona
Today you are acting as The Responsible Innovator. You are not just looking at the technical side of how to delete a post; you are thinking deeply about the ethical and social impacts of our digital lives. You ask: "How can we use these platforms safely, respectfully, and positively?"

1
Prepare your workspace

Start by getting your digital canvas ready for your guide.

1
Open your preferred presentation or desktop publishing software.
2
Create a new blank document in a landscape format.
3
Add a bold, clear title at the top of your page.

2
Gather your research

Before you write your advice, you need to understand how to actively manage a digital footprint.

1
Use a search engine to find reliable advice on managing an online reputation.
2
To get safe, high-quality results, click this custom search link: Search for Digital Footprint Cleanup
3
Note down three practical tips that a Year 7 student could easily follow.

3
Ask the AI for an analogy

Sometimes complex ideas are easier to understand with a comparison. Let us use AI to generate a helpful analogy about social media reality.

1
Copy the prompt below and paste it into Google's AI search.
2
Read the response carefully and rewrite the best part in your own words to use on your infographic.

Act as an expert digital wellbeing coach. Explain how social media filters and highlight reels affect how we view reality. Limit your response to exactly 100 words. Your audience is 12 to 13 year olds. Keep the tone encouraging, non-judgmental, and easy to understand. You must use one clear real-world analogy and avoid complex technical jargon. NO intro, NO outro, NO deviation from the topic, NO follow-up questions

4
Build your final design

Bring all your research and text together into a visually appealing format.

1
Add a section titled The Invisible Tattoo and list your three practical digital footprint tips.
2
Add a section titled Media vs Reality and include your rewritten AI analogy.
3
Add a final section titled The Golden Rule of Respect and write one sentence about how you should treat others online.
4
Add relevant icons or shapes to make the text stand out, then use the Save button to secure your work.

Outcome
I have created a single-page digital infographic or slide.
I have included three practical tips for cleaning up a digital footprint.
I have included an easy-to-understand analogy explaining the difference between social media and reality.
I have stated a clear rule for online respect.

Unplugged Task: The Reality Filter Storyboard

As The Responsible Innovator, you know that what we see online is rarely the whole truth. Your unplugged task is to design a paper storyboard that reveals the hidden reality behind a perfect social media post.

1
Take a blank piece of A4 paper and fold it in half horizontally to create a top and bottom section.
2
In the top section, draw a three-panel comic strip showing a "Highlight Reel" moment. This could be a perfect holiday snap, a flawless sports trick, or an amazing meal. Label this section What Gets Posted.
3
In the bottom section, draw the exact same three moments, but zoom out to show the messy, chaotic, or completely normal reality that the camera did not capture. Label this section What Actually Happened.
4
Below your drawings, write a short, two-sentence manifesto explaining why comparing our everyday lives to someone else's highlight reel is dangerous for our mental health.
